Number of tracks sign

Railroad crossing signs

Number of tracks sign

Mounted under a crossbuck: shows how many tracks cross the road. After one train passes, check for another on the next track.

MUTCD designation R15-2P. See the federal MUTCD, page 25.

How to read signs like this

The round yellow advance sign warns that a railroad crossing is ahead. The white X-shaped crossbuck marks the crossing itself and works like a yield sign.

Practice question

  1. Road sign for this question

This plaque is mounted below a railroad crossbuck. What does it tell you?

    • A There is more than one track, so another train may come
    • B That many trains pass through this crossing on a typical day
    • C You must stop that many feet from the tracks
    • D The next crossing is that many miles away
    Show answer

    A. There is more than one track, so another train may come

This plaque shows the number of tracks at the crossing when there are two or more. After one train passes, another may be coming on a different track, sometimes hidden by the first. Wait until you can see clearly in both directions before crossing.
