Iowa rules that catch people out

These come from questions learners find hardest. Each links to the page of the handbook it comes from.

  • With a passenger restriction, for the first six months you may carry no more than one unrelated minor when driving unsupervised. Brothers, sisters, step-siblings and minors in your household do not count. Teen passengers are a major source of distraction for new drivers.

  • Before a full license, Iowa intermediate drivers must log 10 more hours of supervised driving, and at least 2 of those hours must be between sunset and sunrise. Night practice matters because darkness cuts visibility and reaction time.

  • For an intermediate license holder, each conviction, crash you cause or restriction violation delays your upgrade to a full license by 12 months. Iowa ties privileges to a clean record so new drivers earn more freedom by driving safely.

  • In Iowa, school buses, charter buses, drivers carrying passengers for hire (such as Uber or Lyft) and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials must stop 15 to 50 feet from the tracks. They need not stop if an officer or signal directs traffic through or the crossing has an EXEMPT sign.

  • When the speed limit is faster than 45 mph, Iowa law requires you to signal at least 300 feet before you turn. Higher speeds mean drivers behind you cover more ground before they can react.

  • After a complete stop, you may turn left on red only from the left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street. No oncoming traffic is crossed in that case, which is why it is allowed.

  • Iowa's general limit in a suburban district is 45 mph when no other limit is posted. A lower limit can always be set for local conditions.

Iowa Driver's License Manual, page 42
  • Since July 1, 2026, Iowa's general speed limit is 60 mph wherever no other limit applies, including primary roads; the 2026 law struck 'fifty-five' and inserted 'sixty'. Interstates allow 70 mph, and lower limits are posted where conditions require them.
