North Carolina rules that catch people out
These come from the questions learners find hardest. Each links to the handbook page it comes from.
When driving unsupervised, a Level 2 driver may carry one passenger under 21 who is not a household member. There is no under-21 limit if every passenger lives in the driver's household, but household and non-household under-21 passengers cannot be mixed.
North Carolina Driver Handbook, page 15Before each graduation step, the driver must have a clean record for the preceding six months: no moving violations, seat belt infractions or cell phone infractions. Level 2 must also be held for at least six months.
North Carolina Driver Handbook, page 15Refusing a required chemical test brings an immediate revocation of at least 30 days and an additional revocation of at least 12 months by DMV. The refusal can also be used as evidence in court.
North Carolina Driver Handbook, page 33A DWI conviction with a BAC of 0.15 or more, or a second conviction within seven years, requires an ignition interlock. The device keeps the car from starting if it detects alcohol on the driver's breath.
North Carolina Driver Handbook, page 34On the first restoration after a DWI, the driver may not drive with an alcohol concentration of 0.04 or more. On a second or later restoration, or after certain offenses such as underage DWI, the limit drops to 0.00.
North Carolina Driver Handbook, page 34Passing a stopped school bus carries 5 points, tied with aggressive driving for the highest value on the regular schedule. The high value reflects how easily a child crossing the road can be killed.
North Carolina Driver Handbook, page 36North Carolina revokes your license for at least 30 days if you are convicted of driving more than 15 mph over the limit at a speed higher than 55 mph. At 72 in a 55 zone you are 17 mph over and above 55.
North Carolina Driver Handbook, page 38If DMV is notified that a vehicle is operating without proper liability insurance, its plate can be revoked for 30 days unless continuous coverage is proven. North Carolina does not recognize insurance grace periods, so a lapse counts.
