  • Permit holders under 18 may not commit permit violations, moving violations or DUI offenses. Any such violation adds at least 180 days, counted from the violation date, before the teen may apply for an intermediate license.

  • Kentucky requires a visual acuity of at least 20/40, corrected or uncorrected, before you take the written test. If you need glasses or contacts to reach it, your license will require you to wear them while driving.

  • Kentucky points expire two years from the conviction date, but the conviction stays on your record for five years. So a ticket can stop counting toward suspension while still appearing on your record.

  • A driver may complete Kentucky State Traffic School only once every 12 months, and only for minor violations. It is not available for convictions that carry a mandatory suspension.

  • Right before any test, Kentucky gives you at least 10 and no more than 15 minutes to try to contact and talk with an attorney. The window is short so the test still reflects your alcohol level at the time of driving.

  • A first DUI conviction within 10 years brings a fine of $200 to $500, 48 hours to 30 days in jail, and a license suspension of four to six months. Drivers under 18 may face a longer suspension.

  • Kentucky requires mandatory jail time when a DUI involves aggravating circumstances such as carrying a passenger under 12, a BAC of .15 or more, driving more than 30 mph over the limit, or driving the wrong way on a limited access highway.

  • Kentucky requires a booster seat for children under 8 who are between 40 and 57 inches tall. A booster lifts the child so the adult lap and shoulder belt fits across the hips and chest instead of the stomach and neck.
