Pennsylvania rules that catch people out

These come from questions learners find hardest. Each links to the page of the handbook it comes from.

  • The increased limit of three passengers does not apply to a junior driver who has ever been partially or fully responsible for a crash or convicted of any driving violation. A clean record earns the extra freedom.

    Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), page 8
  • A junior driver receives a mandatory 90-day suspension for building up six or more points or being convicted of driving 26 mph or more over the posted limit. Any later occurrence brings a 120-day suspension.

    Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), page 8
  • The first time an adult's record reaches six or more points, PennDOT sends notice to take a written special point examination. Reaching six points again leads to a Departmental hearing, and further accumulations can mean suspension.

    Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), page 83
  • Three points are removed for every 12 consecutive months in which you are not suspended and commit no violation that brings points or a suspension. Safe driving steadily cleans your record.

    Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), page 83
  • After your driving privilege is restored, the record shows five points no matter how many it had before. Exceptions include the 15-day suspension from a second six-point hearing and suspensions for failing to respond to a citation.

    Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), page 84
  • Pennsylvania requires liability insurance on a registered vehicle at all times. A lapse of 31 days or more means a three-month registration suspension, and if you drove or let someone drive the car uninsured, your license is suspended for three months too.

    Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), page 84
  • Under-21 drivers convicted of DUI face the 'High Rate' penalties even with a low BAC. For a first offense, that means 2 days to 6 months in jail, a full-year suspension and a fine of $500 to $5,000.

    Pennsylvania Driver's Manual (PUB 95), page 88
  • Adults who knowingly supply minors with alcohol face at least $1,000 for the first minor and $2,500 for each additional one, plus up to a year in jail. For three teens that is $1,000 + $2,500 + $2,500 = $6,000.
