Washington rules that catch people out

These come from questions learners find hardest. Each links to the page of the handbook it comes from.

  • Washington's approved traffic safety course standard is 30 hours of classroom and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. An out-of-state course must meet that minimum to count toward a Washington license.

  • Intermediate penalties step up: a first violation keeps restrictions in place until 18, a second brings a 6-month suspension (or until 18, if sooner), and a third suspends the license until 18.

    Washington Driver Guide, page 29
  • Under Washington's implied consent law, a first refusal within seven years means your license is revoked or denied for one year. A second refusal, or a refusal after an earlier incident, means two years or until age 21, whichever is longer. (The 2025 Driver Guide's '90 to 730 days' range is not what the statute says for refusals.)

  • Property damage coverage must be at least $10,000 per collision. Remember the three numbers together: 25 for one person, 50 for two or more, 10 for property.

  • Tire tread should not be less than 2/32 of an inch. Worn tires can slip and slide, especially on wet Washington roads.

  • You won't see a flashing green light in Washington. In British Columbia, Canada, a flashing green warns that pedestrians are waiting to cross.

  • Shared center lanes are only for left turns (or permitted U-turns) from either direction. You shouldn't travel more than 300 feet in one, and you must never use it for passing.

  • Medians divide roadways and can be open spaces, cement dividers or 18-inch solid yellow pavement markings with stripes. It is illegal to drive within, over or across any of them.
