These come from the questions learners find hardest. Each links to the handbook page it comes from.
You can apply for the Intermediate Unrestricted license at 17 after holding the Intermediate Restricted license for one year with a clean record. No additional tests are needed; the restrictions are simply lifted.
Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, page 28Too many points, an at-fault crash, or a second seat belt violation adds 90 days to the one-year minimum before a teen can get the Intermediate Unrestricted license. (The manual says 'six or more' points on p33 but 'more than 6' on p28, as does the Department of Safety teen license page; 7 points triggers the delay under either wording.) The extra time keeps risky new drivers under restrictions longer.
Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, page 33Adults with 12 or more points in a 12-month period receive a notice of proposed suspension, while 6 to 11 points brings an advisory letter. Points are designed to warn drivers before they lose the privilege to drive.
Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, page 100Drivers may attend a Defensive Driving Course to avoid a suspension or shorten it, but only once in any five-year period. Repeat offenders cannot keep taking the course to escape consequences.
Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, page 100A first DUI brings at least 48 hours in jail (7 days if BAC was 0.20 or higher), a $350 to $1,500 fine, and a one-year revocation. Judges can add treatment, DUI school and litter pickup.
Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, page 96Juveniles aged 13 to 17 found to have possessed, consumed or sold alcohol or drugs lose the driving privilege for one year or until age 17, whichever is longer. A second offense means two years or until 18.
Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, page 97A DUI conviction requires litter pickup for three eight-hour shifts while wearing clothing that reads "I am a DRUNK DRIVER." Tennessee residents do this in their home county.
Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual, page 95A teen permit or intermediate holder caught using a cell phone faces a Class C misdemeanor, a $50 fine, 6 points, and a 90-day delay in eligibility for the Intermediate Restricted license. Six points alone can also extend the permit stage.
