Under Alabama's graduated license law, a 16-year-old (or a 17-year-old licensed less than 6 months) may carry no more than one non-family passenger, other than a parent, guardian or supervising licensed driver at least 21. Extra teen passengers are a major distraction and crash risk for new drivers.
Alabama Driver Manual, page 86Breaking a GDL restriction keeps you in the restricted stage longer: the restricted period is extended by 6 months or until you turn 18. No points are added and there are no criminal penalties for the restriction itself.
Alabama Driver Manual, page 86A first mandatory liability insurance violation can bring a fine of up to $500, and a second or later violation up to $1,000. A six-month license suspension is also possible. Insurance protects other people if you cause a crash.
Alabama Driver Manual, page 70When a crash causes injury, death, or $500 or more in damage and the at-fault party was uninsured, a written SR-31 form must be sent within 30 days. If both parties were insured, neither has to file it.
Alabama Driver Manual, page 40Alabama suspends licenses on a sliding scale: 12-14 points in two years brings 60 days, 15-17 points 90 days, and so on up to 365 days for 24 or more. Points come from moving-violation convictions, so repeated tickets add up.
Alabama Driver Manual, page 21For a GDL driver, a conviction for offenses such as reckless driving, illegal passing, driving on the wrong side of the road, or any offense worth four or more points brings an automatic 60-day suspension. A second moving violation does the same.
Alabama Driver Manual, page 86A second DUI conviction within 10 years brings a fine of $1,100 to $5,100, a mandatory 48 hours in jail or 20 days of community service, and a one-year license revocation. Each repeat offense carries tougher penalties.
Alabama Driver Manual, page 35Alabama's Hands-Free Law, effective June 2024, targets drivers who physically hold a phone or other wireless device while driving. A first conviction brings a $50 fine and 1 point, rising to $100 and 2 points, then $150 and 3 points within 24 months.
