These come from questions learners find hardest. Each links to the page of the handbook it comes from.
Teens applying for a JOL must log 40 hours of driving supervised by a parent or guardian, but the RMV accepts 30 hours if the applicant completed a driver skills development program. A parent or guardian certifies the hours.
Massachusetts Driver's Manual (Class D Passenger Vehicles), page 18JOL holders may not drive between 12:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless a parent or legal guardian is with them. Driving in those hours counts as driving without a license, which is a criminal violation. Don't mix this up with the permit rule, which starts at midnight.
Massachusetts Driver's Manual (Class D Passenger Vehicles), page 18Seven surchargeable events (moving violations and at-fault crashes) within a three-year period bring an automatic 60-day suspension. These events also raise your insurance premium under the Safe Driver Insurance Plan.
Massachusetts Driver's Manual (Class D Passenger Vehicles), page 67The base speeding fine plus surcharge covers the first 10 mph over ($105), and every mph beyond that adds $10. At 18 mph over: $105 plus 8 times $10 equals $185. In a posted work zone, the fine is doubled.
Massachusetts Driver's Manual (Class D Passenger Vehicles), page 65Massachusetts minimum limits are $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash for bodily injury, plus $30,000 for property damage. An out-of-state road-test vehicle must show coverage at least this high.
Massachusetts Driver's Manual (Class D Passenger Vehicles), page 32Refusing a chemical test brings much longer suspensions for young drivers. A driver under 18 with no prior OUI loses the license for three years plus an extra year, which can drop to 180 days with a DPH-approved alcohol education program on a first case.
Massachusetts Driver's Manual (Class D Passenger Vehicles), page 78Drivers under 18 who fail a chemical test lose their license for 30 days plus an additional year under M.G.L. c.90, s.24P. On a first case, the extra year can drop to 180 days with an approved alcohol education program, whatever happens in court.
Massachusetts Driver's Manual (Class D Passenger Vehicles), page 77A first OUI conviction carries a fine of $500 to $5,000, up to 2 1/2 years in prison and a one-year license suspension. The penalties rise sharply with each later offense.
