Oregon rules that catch people out

These come from questions learners find hardest. Each links to the page of the handbook it comes from.

  • In Oregon you may turn on red after a complete stop when you are turning right onto a two-way road, or right or left onto a one-way road in its direction of travel. A sign or police officer can still prohibit it.

  • A steady red arrow means stop and stay stopped, but Oregon allows the same turns on a red arrow as on a circular red. Always come to a complete stop and yield first.

  • A painted median separates the two directions of travel. You may turn left across it once oncoming traffic clears, but you cannot drive in it or use it as a place to wait.

  • Hand-and-arm signals are hard to see, so Oregon allows them only in daylight when you can see 1,000 feet. At night or in poor visibility you must use signal lights, and drivers of wide or long vehicles should not use hand signals.

  • In a city, you may not make a U-turn where traffic from either direction cannot see you within 500 feet. Outside city limits the distance is 1,000 feet because speeds are higher.

  • Oregon allows a left on red only when you turn onto a one-way road. Turning left from a one-way road onto a two-way road against a red light is not allowed, so wait for the signal.

  • When being passed, stay to the right and adjust your speed to help the other driver. Do not use your hands or lights to wave them around; Oregon law prohibits flashing signals for this.

  • Oregon has two kinds of digital speed signs. Yellow variable advisory signs recommend a speed and are enforced through the basic rule, while black-and-white variable speed limit signs are enforced like any speed limit.
