Each traffic violation committed while you drive on a permit adds 30 days to the six-month waiting period before you can get a provisional license. Mistakes slow down your progress, which gives you more supervised time.
New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (Taxation and Revenue Department) websiteTo move from a provisional to an unrestricted license, you must have held the provisional license for 12 months, have no traffic convictions in the last 90 days and none pending, and have no alcohol or drug offense from the provisional period, whether decided or still pending. New Mexico treats drinking or drug use by a new driver as a sign they are not ready for full privileges.
New Mexico Driver Manual, page 5New Mexico issues new and renewal instruction permits for a four-year period, unless a medical report or turning 21 calls for a shorter one. The six-month figure is only the minimum you must hold it before moving on.
New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (Taxation and Revenue Department) websiteYou may retake the knowledge test as soon as you like, even the same day, but you may not take it more than twice in one week. Use the time between tries to study the topics you missed.
New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (Taxation and Revenue Department) websiteViolations such as driving without insurance or registration do not carry points. Instead you must appear in court, which can lead to more fines or a suspended license.
New Mexico Driver Manual, page 17The minimum is $50,000 when two or more people are hurt or killed in one crash. Remember the set as 25/50/10.
New Mexico Driver Manual, page 38Even a .02 percent concentration, barely one drink, could result in a 6-month license revocation for drivers under 21. That is why the only safe amount for a young driver is none.
New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (Taxation and Revenue Department) websiteAny DWI conviction remains on your New Mexico driving record for twenty-five years. Later DWI convictions bring bigger fines, more jail time and longer revocations.
