  3. Drill your weak topics

Your results show which topics you miss. Practice just those.

  4. Fix every mistake

Questions you miss are saved in this browser. Each one stays in your trainer until you get it right on 3 separate days.

Indiana rules that catch people out

These come from questions learners find hardest. Each links to the page of the handbook it comes from.

  • At least 10 of the 50 supervised hours must be at night unless the permit carries restriction G (daytime only). Night practice matters because darkness makes hazards harder to see.

  • After 180 days, drivers under 18 may not drive after 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, before 5 a.m. Monday through Friday, or between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Work, school activities, religious events or a qualifying adult in the car are exceptions.

    Indiana Driver's Manual, page 15
  • The manual lists automatic failures such as backing over a curb, speeding, disobeying a signal, failing to yield and not wearing a seat belt. Smaller errors like reversing too fast reduce your score instead.

  • Driving while suspended and a speed contest on the road are each 8 points, the highest on the manual's examples. Following too closely and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle are 6 points.

  • Completing a BMV-approved DSP gives a four-point credit, and each driver can get one such credit in a three-year period. Courses ordered by a court earn the credit only if they are BMV-approved.

  • Indiana charges $250 for a first no-insurance suspension, $500 for a second and $1,000 for a third or later. You can avoid the fee by filing an SR22 and keeping it for 180 days continuously.

    Indiana Driver's Manual, page 28
  • Section C of the HTV law sets a five-year suspension for 10 or more violations in 10 years when one is a major offense. For example, nine speeding tickets plus one reckless driving conviction qualifies.

    Indiana Driver's Manual, page 31
  • Indiana suspends a driver who refuses a chemical test for one year, longer than the 180 days for failing one. With a prior OWI conviction, refusal brings a two-year suspension.
