Missouri rules that catch people out

These come from questions learners find hardest. Each links to the page of the handbook it comes from.

  • Under 16, you may drive only with a parent, stepparent, grandparent, guardian, qualified instructor, or a person at least 25 who has been licensed for three years and has written permission from your parent or guardian. The extra rules make sure your supervisor is experienced and approved by your family.

  • The Highway Patrol's driver examination record is not a permit. The six-month (182-day) holding period starts only once the license office issues your temporary instruction permit, counted from the day after issuance, so delaying that trip delays your intermediate license.

    Missouri Driver Guide, page 5
  • To graduate from the permit, you need no alcohol-related convictions in the last 12 months and no traffic convictions in the last six months. A clean recent record shows you are ready for more independence.

  • When your privilege is reinstated, your total drops to four points. Each clean year lowers it further: by one-third after one year, by half after two, and to zero after three.

  • Failing to stop for a school bus that is receiving or discharging students adds 5 points. A court may also suspend your license, for 90 days on a first or second offense and 180 days for a third within five years.

    Missouri Driver Guide, page 75
  • Abuse and Lose lets Missouri take a license for 90 days from anyone under 21 who possesses or uses alcohol or drugs while driving, commits an alcohol-related traffic offense, or alters a license.

    Missouri Driver Guide, page 71
  • For anyone over 15 and under 21, possessing alcohol can lead to a court suspending or revoking the license, and consumption counts as possession. A first MIP offense brings a 30-day suspension.

  • A first DWI is a class B misdemeanor in Missouri, punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000, plus loss of your license. The Driver Guide's $500 figure is the pre-2017 maximum. Penalties rise steeply with each later offense.
