Montana rules that catch people out
These come from the questions learners find hardest. Each links to the handbook page it comes from.
After the first six months, the passenger limit rises from one to three unrelated passengers under 18, unless a licensed adult is supervising. The limits end when the one-year restriction ends or the driver turns 18.
Montana Driver Manual (Form 25-0100), page 18A first violation of the restricted-license rules brings 20 to 60 hours of community service. A second violation suspends the teen's license for six months.
Montana Driver Manual (Form 25-0100), page 18Under MCA 61-6-304 a first conviction for driving uninsured brings a fine of $250 to $500, and the point schedule adds 5 points. A second conviction also means surrendering your plates and registration; jail of up to 10 days is possible from the third conviction.
Montana Department of Justice, Motor Vehicle Division websiteExceptions include vehicles made before January 1, 1968, occupants carrying a physician's written statement that they cannot wear a belt for medical reasons, and operators of special mobile equipment. Everyone else must buckle up.
Montana Driver Manual (Form 25-0100), page 30When following another vehicle, dim your high beams within 500 feet so they do not glare in the other driver's mirrors. For oncoming traffic, the distance is 1000 feet.
Montana Driver Manual (Form 25-0100), page 24Studded tires help on ice but damage road surfaces, so Montana does not allow them from June 1 through September 30. Outside that period, they can be used for winter traction.
Montana Driver Manual (Form 25-0100), page 70Montana permits a left turn on red from a one-way street onto another one-way street, under the same conditions as a right on red: stop first, be in the proper lane, and yield.
Montana Driver Manual (Form 25-0100), page 50You may turn around where you have 500 feet of unobstructed view in both directions, almost two city blocks, and no vehicles are approaching. Never turn around on a busy street or near a curve or hill, and remember many cities ban mid-block U-turns.
