Alabama motorcycle rules to know
- Alabama lets a person who has reached age 16 and holds a Class M license ride either a motorcycle or a motor-driven cycle. Younger riders, aged 14 and 15, are limited to small motor-driven cycles. Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual (with Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 3
- At 14 you may apply for a restricted license that covers motor-driven cycles only, such as small scooters and mopeds. The full motorcycle license without size limits comes at 16. Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual (with Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 3
- Alabama defines a motor-driven cycle as a motorcycle or scooter whose motor makes no more than five brake horsepower and displaces no more than 150 cc, and which weighs less than 200 pounds fully equipped. Anything bigger is a motorcycle and needs the full Class M license. Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual (with Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 3
- Alabama recognizes two classes of engine-equipped cycles: motorcycles and motor-driven cycles. A moped counts as a motor-driven cycle, so the cycle laws in the manual, including the helmet law, apply to moped riders too. Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual (with Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 3
- Restriction B limits a young rider to motor-driven cycles of 5 horsepower or less and applies only at ages 14 and 15. At 16 the rider can transfer to a motorcycle license without the size limit. Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual (with Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 3
- At age 16 the holder of a restricted motor-driven cycle license may return to the driver license examining office and transfer to a motorcycle class license without the size restrictions. Until then, the size limit stays on the license. Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual (with Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 3
