Maneuvers on the Arizona driving test

Steps and scoring come from Arizona Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division’s own materials, in their words where possible. Where a state publishes no steps, we say so rather than guess.

Vehicle inspection and basic safety knowledge

Always tested

How it’s scored

The vehicle is inspected before driving; an unacceptable vehicle means a reschedule. You then locate or demonstrate the speedometer, hazard lights, high beams, emergency brake, hand signals (left, right, stop), windshield wipers and defroster, and say which side of the road to yield to for active emergency vehicles. Each missed item is 1 point.

Steps

  1. Know where the insurance and registration cards are in the vehicle so you can present them
  2. Locate the speedometer
  3. Locate and demonstrate the hazard lights, high beams and windshield wipers
  4. Engage and disengage the emergency brake
  5. Demonstrate hand signals for left, right and stop
  6. Locate the defroster

Lane change

How it’s scored

The examiner may direct you to change lanes left or right. An improper lane change and signaling errors are 4 points each; choice of proper lane is 4 points.

Steps

Not officially described by MVD.

Parallel parking / parking at the curb

How it’s scored

The score sheet charges 4 points for parking too far from the curb and 4 points for jumping or hitting the curb. MVD does not state that parallel parking is always tested; the steps below are from the driver license manual.

Steps

  1. Check traffic behind you and signal that you are stopping
  2. Stop alongside the forward car with your back bumper lined up with its back bumper, about two feet away
  3. Shift into reverse; looking over your right shoulder, back slowly while turning the wheel sharply right
  4. When your front bumper passes the forward car's rear bumper, turn the wheel sharply left and keep backing until parallel to the curb
  5. Straighten the wheels and slowly pull forward

Arizona road test questions

What is on the Arizona road test?

An MVD examiner rides with you in your own vehicle over a test route with a variety of traffic situations, giving directions in English. ADOT describes the course as about 15-20 minutes and five to eight miles. It starts with a vehicle inspection and basic safety-knowledge checks; errors are scored in points (1, 2, 4 or 10 each) and 21 or more points is a fail, with separate automatic failures. Maneuvers covered by official sources: Vehicle inspection and basic safety knowledge, Lane change, Left turns, Right turns, Stop signs, traffic lights and intersections, Parking in a space, Parallel parking / parking at the curb.

How is the Arizona driving test scored?

Point system. Basic safety knowledge items cost 1 point each; driving and parking errors cost 10, 4 or 2 points each. Accumulating 21 or more points is a fail. Major violations, dangerous actions and refusing instructions are automatic failures.

What is an automatic fail on the Arizona road test?

Official Arizona sources list these as automatic failures: Major violation(s); Dangerous action; and Refusing instructions.

What do I need to bring to the Arizona road test?

Valid identification documents; Current vehicle registration and proof of current liability insurance (out-of-country insurance not accepted); A parent or legal guardian if under 18; A completed driver license application; and If using a rental car, a rental agreement listing you as a driver.

What are the vehicle requirements for the Arizona road test?

Proof of current registration, insurance and plate (3-day permits not accepted); Fuel tank at least a quarter full; electric vehicles should not have the low-battery light on; Tires properly inflated and free from excessive wear, damage or defects; No windshield obstructions for driver or examiner; Doors, horn, seat belts and windows all work; At least two unobstructed mirrors; All turn signals and brake lights work; Working speedometer; Interior free of debris; Driver assistance systems (auto-drive, parking assist) may not be used; and Without air conditioning, no testing after noon from June 1 to September 22.

When can I take the Arizona road test?

Under 18: at least 16, instruction permit held at least six months, a parent or legal guardian with you, and either an approved driver education program or a parent's written certification of at least 30 hours of supervised practice (10 at night). 18 and over: a passed written test. Road tests are by appointment only, one per customer per day.

What happens if I fail the Arizona road test?

Wait seven days before retaking the road test. No official source found states a retest fee or an attempt limit for the road test.

Can the Arizona road test be waived?

MVD may accept a road test given by an authorized third party, or documentation of a department-approved driver training course. Teens can pass the final road skills test at an MVD-certified professional driving school or high school driver education program. Driving schools do not issue waivers to adults outside those programs.

Notes from our check

Official score sheet: MVD form 99-0138 'Before You Take the Road Test' (R05/25) lists the vehicle inspection, basic safety knowledge items and every point value; the road-tests web page repeats the same list. Form 99-0138 lays the 4-point and 2-point items out in columns, so its extracted text runs them together; point values here follow the web page, which lists each group separately and matches the form. Neither source names a specific parking maneuver; the scored items (parked too far from curb, outside of parking space, not perpendicular with curb) suggest curb and space parking, so parking maneuvers are marked required: null. Parallel parking steps come from the driver license manual, not from the test description. The 7-day retest wait is from an ADOT blog answer (an ADOT news release on the same change could not be fetched by script). The driver license manual lists 'Fasten your seat belt' among English directions where the web page and form say 'Does your seat belt work?'.
