- Questions are drawn fresh from the full Kentucky bank each time.
Sample questions
In Kentucky, what does a motorcycle instruction permit NOT allow you to do?
- A Carry a passenger
- B Ride on public roads
- C Ride during daylight hours
- D Ride a motorcycle you do not own
Show answer
A. Carry a passenger
Kentucky law says a rider operating on an instruction permit is not authorized to carry passengers. A passenger changes how the motorcycle balances, accelerates and stops, so the state keeps that extra challenge away from learners.
During a quick stop, your front wheel locks. What should you do?
- A Keep the front brake locked and steer with the rear until you stop
- B Release both brakes and coast to a stop
- C Use only the rear brake from then on
- D Release the front brake immediately, then reapply it firmly
Show answer
D. Release the front brake immediately, then reapply it firmly
If the front wheel locks, release the front brake immediately and then reapply it firmly while pressing the rear brake. A locked front wheel loses steering and balance, but a quick release lets it start rolling again.
Who may legally ride a motorcycle without a helmet in Kentucky?
- A Any operator 18 or older with a motorcycle license
- B Any operator over 21, including riders who only hold an instruction permit
- C An operator riding under 30 mph on local roads
- D An operator 21 or older who has held a motorcycle license one year or more
Show answer
D. An operator 21 or older who has held a motorcycle license one year or more
Kentucky lets an operator ride without a helmet only if they are 21 or older and have held a motorcycle license for at least one year. Riders under 21, anyone on an instruction permit and anyone licensed less than a year must wear protective headgear.
What minimum following distance does the Kentucky manual say you should normally keep behind the vehicle ahead?
- A Two seconds
- B Three seconds
- C One car length per 10 mph
- D Four seconds
Show answer
D. Four seconds
Kentucky's manual says to keep a minimum of four seconds behind the vehicle ahead, counted from a fixed marker. Motorcycles need as much distance to stop as cars, and the gap also gives you a better view of potholes and hazards.
