Who can take the Mississippi road test

No road test applies. At 16, after holding the learner's permit 12 months (or until the 17th birthday), a teen upgrades to Class R with the permit, a current school attendance form and the road-test waiver affidavit. At 17 and older, applicants can get the permit and license the same day with no affidavit. From July 1, 2027, a first license will also require a certified driver education course. Waivers and third-party testing

The road test is waived for everyone at present. By statute (Miss. Code §63-1-33(7)), DPS accepts an affidavit from a parent, teacher or guardian who has watched the student drive at least 50 hours and attests to their safe driving, in place of a DPS skills test; it also accepts a certificate from an approved secondary-school driver education program (§63-1-33(6)). DPS requires the Waiver of Road Testing Affidavit from teens upgrading a learner's permit before age 17, and not from applicants 17 and older. How is the Mississippi driving test scored?

No road test is given, so there is no scoring.

What do I need to bring to the Mississippi road test?

Valid learner's permit; Up-to-date school attendance form (under 18); and Signed Waiver of Road Testing Affidavit (under 17).

When can I take the Mississippi road test?

No road test applies. At 16, after holding the learner's permit 12 months (or until the 17th birthday), a teen upgrades to Class R with the permit, a current school attendance form and the road-test waiver affidavit. At 17 and older, applicants can get the permit and license the same day with no affidavit. From July 1, 2027, a first license will also require a certified driver education course.

What happens if I fail the Mississippi road test?

Not applicable: no road test is given for a regular license.

Can the Mississippi road test be waived?

The road test is waived for everyone at present. By statute (Miss. Code §63-1-33(7)), DPS accepts an affidavit from a parent, teacher or guardian who has watched the student drive at least 50 hours and attests to their safe driving, in place of a DPS skills test; it also accepts a certificate from an approved secondary-school driver education program (§63-1-33(6)). Notes from our check

DPS states that no skills (road) test is currently required for any regular driver's license applicant; road tests are scheduled only for CDLs (by phone) and skills tests for motorcycle endorsements. The statute agrees: Miss. Code §63-1-33 (as amended by HB 1371, approved July 8, 2020, text on the legislature's site) requires sign and knowledge tests for a regular license but lets DPS accept the 50-hour affidavit or a school driver-education certificate instead of its own skills test. No Class R score sheet, maneuver list, automatic-failure list or test-vehicle checklist is published, so this page has no vehicle section. Who needs the affidavit: the statute sets no age. The 2025 driver's manual lists the 50-hour affidavit among the reasons a license can be refused and elsewhere says it applies if you are under 17; the DPS Class R page says it is not required for applicants 17 and older. This page follows the DPS Class R page (the current agency page): under 17, yes; 17 and older, no. From July 1, 2027, a first license will also require a certified driver education course (SB 2695, approved May 10, 2024, and the manual); no official source says that will bring back a DPS road test. The manual's parallel-parking steps are general driving guidance, not a test item.
