Nevada motorcycle rules to know

  • A Nevada motorcycle instruction permit limits you to riding in daylight hours. Riding in daylight gives a beginner the clearest view of the road and the best chance of being seen by drivers.

  • Permit holders may not ride on freeways or other high-speed roads. Higher speeds leave less time to react and make mistakes more severe, so beginners practice on slower streets first.

  • A Nevada motorcycle instruction permit does not allow passengers. A passenger changes how the motorcycle accelerates, brakes and turns, which is too much for a rider who is still learning basic control.

  • Your supervisor must have a valid motorcycle license, be at least 21, have at least one year of driving experience, and be riding a motorcycle while keeping you in direct view. A supervisor in a car or truck does not count, because the point is to have an experienced rider nearby who can show you how to handle the road.

Nevada Official Driver Handbook (DMV 700), page 18
  • For riders 18 and older, a motorcycle instruction permit is valid for 6 months and can be renewed only once in a 5-year period. To complete the permit, an adult passes the DMV skills test or shows a motorcycle safety course certificate dated within one year.

  • Riders under 18 must present a motorcycle safety course certificate dated within one year and submit a DLD-130 Beginner Experience Drive Log showing 50 hours. Combining formal training with logged practice gives young riders both skills and experience.
