  • All signals, brake lights and windshield wipers working
  • No autocycles and no self-parking vehicles

  • Rejected for: poor brakes, brake warning light on, unsafe tires, unclean interior, fast idle, missing seat belts, tinted driver or front door windows, missing interior or driver-door mirror, broken or cracked glass, doors or windows that don't work from inside

How the New Jersey road test is scored

The MVC does not publish a score sheet, point values or a pass mark. The examiner rides along and tests a fixed list of items (driving in reverse, following, nearing corners and intersections, parallel parking, sitting properly and seat belt use, starting, steering, stopping at signs, stopping smoothly, turning, turning around, using the horn, yielding). If you pass, the examiner endorses your permit. Official source 1nj.gov“During the road test, an MVC examiner will ride with the applicant when they drive in an off-road test area or on a public road course. Automatic failures

We found no official list of automatic failures for New Jersey. Treat any dangerous action, a crash, or breaking a traffic law as likely to fail the test.

Maneuvers on the New Jersey driving test

Steps and scoring come from New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s own materials, in their words where possible. Where a state publishes no steps, we say so rather than guess.

Driving in reverse (about 100 feet straight)

Always tested

How it’s scored

You back about 100 feet in a straight line, slowly and smoothly. Palming the wheel with one hand while turning in reverse can fail the test.

Steps

  1. Make sure the path is clear using the mirrors and by turning to look
  2. Turn your head and body to the right until you can see clearly through the back window
  3. Place your right arm over the back of the passenger seat and grasp the top of the wheel with your left hand
  4. Back slowly, at walking speed (2 to 4 mph), correcting as needed
  5. Stop completely before shifting to drive forward
SourcesOfficial source 1nj.gov“A motorist must be able to drive in reverse to pass the road portion of the driving test. They will be asked to back the vehicle about 100 feet in a straight line, slowly and smoothly.”“To drive in reverse, a motorist's head and body should be turned to the right until they can see clearly through the back window of the vehicle without the use of mirrors.”“Palming the wheel with one hand while turning in reverse is dangerous and can result in failing the road test.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026

3-point turn (K-turn)

Always tested

How it’s scored

Listed as 'Turning around' on the road test. The manual says a new motorist will be required to make this turn.

Steps

  1. Start from the right edge of the road at a safe spot with good visibility both ways
  2. Signal left and move forward slowly, turning the wheel left; stop several inches from the left curb or edge
  3. Back up slowly, turning the wheel right; stop several inches from the right curb or edge
  4. Move forward, turning the wheel left
  5. Straighten the wheels as the vehicle faces the new direction
SourcesOfficial source 1nj.gov“When turning a vehicle around, a motorist should start from the right edge of the road. Choose a safe spot with good visibility in both directions.”“The motorist should then back up slowly while turning the steering wheel to the right, stopping several inches from the right curb or street edge.”“This is a complete 3-Point (or K) Turn. A new motorist will be required to make this turn during the MVC's road test.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026

Parallel parking

Always tested

How it’s scored

You must be able to parallel park to pass. Practice markers 25 feet apart are suggested; tires should end no more than six inches from the curb. No practice is allowed in the test parallel-parking area.

Steps

  1. Find a space large enough for the vehicle
  2. Signal for a stop and signal right
  3. Pull up parallel, about two to four feet from the vehicle in front
  4. Turn and check that the way is clear behind
  5. Look out the rear window, back slowly about two feet, and turn the wheel all the way right
  6. When the front clears the rear bumper of the vehicle in front, stop and check the angle; make sure the right rear wheel has not hit the curb
  7. Turn the wheel all the way left while backing slowly
  8. When in line, stop without hitting the vehicle behind
  9. Straighten the wheels and pull to the center of the space, no more than six inches from the curb
SourcesOfficial source 1nj.gov“A motorist must be able to parallel park a vehicle to pass the MVC's road test. This takes the most practice for a new motorist.”“Signal for a stop and signal to the right to alert motorists that the vehicle will back up to the right. • Pull up alongside (parallel) about two to four feet from the vehicle in front.”“Turn the vehicle's wheels straight, and drive to the center of the parking space. The vehicle's tires should be no more than six inches from the curb.”“No practice driving is permitted on the test course or in the parallel parking area.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026

Notes from our check

No official score sheet, point values or automatic-failure list is published by the NJ MVC; automatic_failures is left empty for that reason. The only published failure warning is that palming the wheel with one hand while turning in reverse 'can result in failing the road test' (listed under backing). The vehicle can also be rejected before the test starts (inspection, brake access, defects, tint, missing decals). The road test web page says the accompanying driver must hold a NJ license for three years; the manual says an accompanying driver licensed out of state or with under three years' experience must drive the car to the test area. The manual lists 'Following other vehicles' and 'Using the horn' as test items; the web page's skills list omits them.
