Sample questions

  1. You are practising on a motorcycle with a New Mexico instructional permit. Where must your supervising licensed driver be?

    • A Following behind you on their own vehicle
    • B Riding as a passenger on your motorcycle
    • C Riding a short distance ahead of you to lead the way
    • D Waiting at your destination to check in
    Show answer

    A. Following behind you on their own vehicle

In every vehicle except a motorcycle, the supervising driver sits in the right front seat. On a motorcycle that is impossible, so New Mexico requires the licensed driver to follow the learner. Following lets the supervisor watch your riding and the traffic around you.

  2. What causes over half of motorcycle/car collisions?

    • A Riders running out of fuel
    • B Riders braking too hard on dry roads
    • C Cars rear-ending parked motorcycles
    • D Drivers entering a rider's right-of-way
    Show answer

    D. Drivers entering a rider's right-of-way

Over half of motorcycle/car collisions happen when drivers enter a rider's right-of-way. That is why intersections, where traffic crosses your path, are the most dangerous places to ride.

  3. What is generally the best lane position for a motorcycle?

    • A No one position; pick one that helps you see and be seen
    • B Always the right third, near the curb
    • C Always the left third, near the center line
    • D Always the exact center of the lane, so drivers see you
    Show answer

    A. No one position; pick one that helps you see and be seen

There is no single best lane position. Pick the portion of the lane that lets you see, be seen and keep a space cushion, and change it as traffic and road conditions change. No part of the lane needs to be avoided, including the center.

    • A .08% or more
    • B .10% or more

    • D .12% or more
    Show answer

    A. .08% or more

You can be arrested for driving with a BAC of .08% or more. Even below that, alcohol slows your reactions and judgment; the manual warns that with two or more drinks you are impaired and could be arrested.
