Driving skills (on-the-road) test

North Carolina Road Test (2026) What’s on the Driving Test, Scoring & Tips

The NCDMV driving skills test is an on-the-road drive in actual traffic, taken after you pass the vision, sign and knowledge tests, in which you perform basic driving patterns such as a quick stop, backing and a three-point turnabout. The driver license examiner (or a certified driver education school, for teens and adult permit holders) scores it pass or fail on how well you execute the required maneuvers. NCDMV does not publish the test length or a point scale.

Steps and scoring come from North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (N.C. Department of Transportation)’s own materials, in their words where possible. Where a state publishes no steps, we say so rather than guess.

Three-point turnabout

Always tested

How it’s scored

Listed as a required maneuver (turnabout) and a skill observed and graded on the road test.

Steps

  1. Start from the extreme right side of the road
  2. Check for traffic; if clear, signal left and move forward slowly while turning the wheel left
  3. Stop within several inches of the left curb or edge of the street
  4. Back slowly while turning the wheel right; stop within several inches of the right curb or edge
  5. Move forward slowly while turning the wheel left to complete the turnabout
SourcesOfficial source 2ncdot.gov“Start from the extreme right side of the road. Notes from our check

NCDMV publishes no examiner score sheet, point values or list of automatic failures for the Class C road test; the official content is the required-maneuver list in 19A NCAC 03B .0201(a)(4), the handbook's 'Skills observed and graded' list and the Driver License Tests page. Parallel parking is not listed in any official source as part of the test. The rule lists 'backing' without saying straight or around a corner; it is filed under backing-straight here. The handbook lists 'driving posture' and 'use of the clutch', which the rule does not; the rule lists 'paying attention' and 'use of brakes', which the handbook does not. The Driver License Tests page's skills list matches the handbook's minus posture and clutch.
