Sample emergencies & crashes questions

  1. Your car has anti-lock brakes (ABS) and you must stop quickly on a slippery road. What should you do?

    • A Pump the brake pedal rapidly
    • B Brake lightly and then release
    • C Press the pedal firmly and keep pressure on it
    • D Use only the parking brake
    Show answer

    C. Press the pedal firmly and keep pressure on it

With ABS, do not pump the brakes. Press firmly and hold; the pedal may pulse, which is normal, and you can still steer.

  2. You press the brake and the pedal sinks to the floor. Your car has ABS. What should you do first?

    • A Hold the pedal down firmly and wait
    • B Pump the brake pedal
    • C Turn off the ignition immediately
    • D Shift into reverse
    Show answer

    B. Pump the brake pedal

In total brake failure, pump the pedal even if you have ABS. Pumping may restore enough pressure to slow you, and you will know within three or four pumps. Then downshift and use the parking brake.

  3. Your accelerator pedal sticks and the engine is racing. What should you do?

    • A Turn off the ignition at once
    • B Pump the gas pedal several times
    • C Shift to neutral while applying the brake
    • D Shift into park while moving
    Show answer

    C. Shift to neutral while applying the brake

If the accelerator sticks, kick the side of the pedal to try to free it, then shift to neutral as you brake. Steer to a safe spot off the road, then turn off the engine.

  4. A car is coming at you head-on in your lane. Which way should you steer?

    • A To the left, into the oncoming lane
    • B Straight ahead while braking
    • C To the right, toward the shoulder
    • D To whichever side has more room
    Show answer

    C. To the right, toward the shoulder

To avoid a head-on crash, brake without locking the wheels, sound the horn, flash your lights and steer right. Do not steer left, because the other driver will likely move back into their own lane.
