There is a solid yellow line on your side of the center line and a broken yellow line on the other side. May you pass?
- A Yes, whenever the road ahead looks clear to you
- B No, not while the solid line is on your side
- C Yes, but only if you signal first
- D Only if the driver ahead waves you by
Show answer
B. No, not while the solid line is on your side
When a solid and a broken yellow line run together, the line nearest you controls. A solid line on your side means no passing; a broken line on your side means you may pass when safe.

What do double solid white lines between lanes going the same direction mean?
- A Lane changes are allowed when safe
- B Lane changes are discouraged but legal
- C Passing is allowed for faster vehicles
- D Lane changes are prohibited
Show answer
D. Lane changes are prohibited
A broken white line allows lane changes when safe, a single solid white line discourages them, and double solid white lines prohibit them. More paint means more restriction.

- A To pass a slow car on a straight road
- B To turn left into a driveway when it is safe

B. To turn left into a driveway when it is safe
Solid yellow lines forbid passing, but you may cross one to turn into a driveway if it is safe. Yield to oncoming traffic before turning across.

- A Left turns by traffic from either direction
- B Passing slower vehicles in either direction
- C Emergency vehicles only
- D Buses and vehicles with two or more people
