Maneuvers on the Florida driving test

Steps and scoring come from Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’s own materials, in their words where possible. Where a state publishes no steps, we say so rather than guess.

Straight-in parking

Always tested

How it’s scored

FAIR (5 points): two attempts to park, not properly spaced in stall, hits cone with bumper, no signal pulling in. BAD (10): car not fully within stall, fails to look behind while backing, knocks down cone with bumper. Disqualified: scrapes paint or damages car, climbs curb, fails to yield while backing, loses control leaving the stall, strikes a cone with anything but the bumper, runs over cones, can't get front wheels in the stall in two attempts, or refuses a second attempt.

Steps

  1. Signal before pulling in
  2. Park straight in so the vehicle is centered in the space
  3. Leave no part of the vehicle sticking out into the traffic lane
  4. Look behind you the whole time you back out of the space
SourcesOfficial source 1flhsmv.gov“Straight-In Parking. Three-point turn (turnabout)

Always tested

How it’s scored

FAIR (4 points): no signal before starting, scrapes tires or bumps curb (touching the curb is permitted), fails to look both ways once. BAD (8): blocks traffic so approaching cars must wait, backs more than once unless the street is under 30 feet wide, fails to look both ways two or more times. Disqualified: drives a tire up and over the curb or sidewalk, makes the turn when traffic or pedestrians are affected, refuses or can't complete it, or half the car leaves the road where there is no curb.

Steps

  1. Signal before starting the maneuver
  2. Look both ways before each move
  3. Turn the car around in a 20 to 40 foot space, backing only once

Backing

Always tested

How it’s scored

FAIR (4 points): weaves, backs over 10 mph, drives forward to straighten. BAD (8): opens door to look back, bumps or scrapes the curb, fails to look back the entire time, uses mirror or camera, backs over 20 mph. Disqualified: unable to back, backs half or more of the car onto the wrong side, never looks to the rear, or jumps the curb.

Steps

  1. Back up about 50 feet at a slow speed
  2. Turn and look to the rear through the back window the whole time
  3. Do not use the rear-view mirror or rear-view camera

Always tested

How it’s scored

FAIR (3 points): ignition not off, gears not set, front wheels not turned at the proper angle. BAD (6): stalls when parking, doesn't use emergency brake, clutch and gas effectively, emergency brake not set. Disqualified: can't perform it or interferes with traffic. If there is no hill on the route, you show or tell the examiner what you would do.

Steps

Official Florida sources list these as automatic failures: A crash; A dangerous driving action; A traffic law violation; Lack of cooperation or refusing to follow directions; Not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, or blocking the crosswalk or cross traffic when others are affected; Entering an intersection on red, or not stopping before a right turn on red; Failing to yield so others must stop or slow; Driving on the wrong side of the road, or changing lanes without a signal when traffic is affected; Turning without a signal when traffic or pedestrians are affected; Losing control of the car during the quick stop; Forcing a car off the road, overtaking in an intersection, or pulling out to pass without a signal when traffic is affected; and Maneuver disqualifiers: climbing the curb or damaging the car in parking, jumping the curb or never looking back while backing, cutting corners on turns.

What do I need to bring to the Florida road test?

A vehicle with a valid license plate, valid registration and proof of insurance (Personal Injury Protection and Property Damage Liability); Your learner's license (surrendering it means no fee for the Class E license if no name or address change is needed); Under 18: the signed or notarized Certification of Driving Experience of a Minor; and Identification documents, if not already provided.

What are the vehicle requirements for the Florida road test?

Valid license plate (tag not expired), registration and proof of insurance; Passes the examiner's basic safety inspection; Working horn, rear-view mirror, turn signals, steering, brakes, tires, brake lights and taillights; Windshield wiper on the driver's side and operable headlights; No cracked or broken glass that hinders visibility; Doors, with front doors that open from inside and outside; stationary seats; Must let the driver give hand signals when required; Jeep-type vehicles need framed canvas or metal doors held by hinges and a latch; Must meet bumper height requirements; Not a low-speed vehicle (top speed 20 to 25 mph); Operable seatbelts (except cars made before 1968 and trucks made before 1972); and No other passengers during the test.

When can I take the Florida road test?

Applicants must hold a learner's license for one year (12 months) or be 18. Drivers under 18 also need a parent, guardian or responsible adult 21+ to certify 50 hours of driving (10 at night) on the Certification of Minor Driving Experience form, and must have no moving-violation convictions for one year from the learner's license issue date (one with adjudication withheld is allowed).

What happens if I fail the Florida road test?

The examiner explains your mistakes; you are asked to study or practice and return another day. The skills retest fee is $20 (plus a $6.25 service fee at a tax collector office). Failing the driving test five times within one year leads to a one-year suspension as incompetent to drive.

Can the Florida road test be waived?

The skills test may be taken at a driver license or tax collector service center, with an approved driver license exam provider or third-party administrator, or through a high school driver education class in DELAP. Anyone who passes through a third-party administrator may be randomly picked for a no-fee retest at an office.

Notes from our check

Official score sheet: Record of Driving Examination, form HSMV 71110 (10/13), incorporated in Rule 15A-1.015, F.A.C. The pass mark (fail at 31 or more penalty points) and the five-attempt rule are in the rule text, published only as a Word file; we converted it to text and verified the wording (see the scoring source). The customer information sheet HSMV 71201 (Rev 12/15) is no longer on flhsmv.gov; it is cited from a county tax collector's site (Sarasota County, an FLHSMV licensing agent). Sources disagree on two details, and this page follows the current FLHSMV skills-test page: the three-point turn space is a 20–40 foot space (FLHSMV page and 2023 handbook; the older HSMV 71201 says 30' to 40'), and the following distance is a minimum of four seconds (FLHSMV page; the 2023 handbook says three to four seconds). Passengers are not allowed; the handbook allows an exception for a language interpreter. HSMV 71110 includes horn-use and being-overtaken items not listed on the public maneuver list. Rule chapter 15A-1 had a rule development notice in July 2026, so scoring may change.
