Florida motorcycle rules to know
- Florida requires new motorcyclists to pass the Basic RiderCourse (BRC) through a Florida Rider Training Program (FRTP) authorized sponsor before the endorsement is added. The course combines classroom work with hands-on riding and a skills evaluation, so riders start on the street with trained habits. Florida Motorcycle Operator Handbook, page 4
- Riders who get their endorsement through the 3WBRC receive an "S" restriction, which limits them to motorcycles with more than two wheels. A trike handles very differently from a two-wheeler, so skills learned on three wheels do not qualify you to ride on two. Florida Motorcycle Operator Handbook, page 62
- For licensing, Florida defines a motorcycle as a motor vehicle with a seat or saddle, designed for no more than three wheels, with an engine larger than 50 cc. Smaller machines fall into other categories such as mopeds, so knowing the cutoff tells you when you need the endorsement. Florida Motorcycle Operator Handbook, page 62
- Lane splitting, riding between lanes of moving or stopped traffic, is illegal in Florida. A door can open, a hand can come out of a window, or a car can shift lanes with no warning, leaving you no room to escape. Florida Motorcycle Operator Handbook, page 63
- Florida allows two motorcycles to ride side by side in one lane, and riding more than two abreast in a single lane is a listed violation. Even when it is legal, the handbook's group-riding advice is not to pair up, because a rider beside you leaves you no room to maneuver around a hazard. Florida Motorcycle Operator Handbook, page 63
- Florida requires handlebars to be no higher than the operator's shoulders. Very high bars force your arms up, which weakens your steering input and makes quick maneuvers harder. Florida Motorcycle Operator Handbook, page 63
