Iowa motorcycle rules to know
- Under 18, you may ride with a licensed parent or guardian who has a motorcycle endorsement, or with a licensed immediate family member who has the endorsement and is at least 21. Anyone else needs to be 25 or older and carry your parent's written permission. The rules make sure your coach is both an experienced rider and someone your family trusts. Iowa Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual, 18th revision), page 6
- For a rider aged 14 through 17, a licensed adult who is not a parent, guardian or immediate family member must be at least 25, hold a valid license with the motorcycle endorsement, and have the parent's or guardian's written permission. The extra age and permission requirements protect young learners riding with non-family adults. Iowa Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual, 18th revision), page 6
- The accompanying person must stay within sight and hearing distance of the learner and must be on or in a different motor vehicle. A second rider or a car following close behind can watch, warn and help, while a passenger on a learner's bike would only make handling harder. Iowa Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual, 18th revision), page 6
- Only one learner may be supervised by any one licensed driver. A supervisor cannot keep two new riders within sight and hearing and help both of them at once, so each learner needs their own supervising rider. Iowa Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual, 18th revision), page 6
- Adding the motorcycle instruction permit to an existing license costs $2 for each year the license is valid, for no more than 4 years. If you do not hold any other license, the DOT fee page lists a $14 permit instead. Iowa Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual, 18th revision), page 6
- Iowa issues the motorcycle instruction permit for one four-year term with no renewal permitted. The permit is meant to be a learning stage, so you are expected to pass the skills test or an approved course and earn the endorsement before it runs out.
