Iowa Road Test (2026)What’s on the Driving Test, Scoring & Tips
An on-street drive over a route the examiner has preselected, in a vehicle you provide, to check that you can control a vehicle in regular traffic and obey traffic laws, signs and signals. The examiner records the result on the Iowa DOT's standard score sheet and explains your score at the end. Parallel parking is not part of the test; most under-18 drivers who finish an approved driver education course do not take it.

Notes from our check
Iowa Administrative Code 761-604.11 refers to Form 430024 ('Your Driving Test', the test criteria handed to applicants) and a standard departmental score sheet, but neither is published online; no official score sheet, point values or passing threshold were found. Iowa publishes no list of automatic failures, so none are listed. The Iowa DOT prep page says parallel parking is not tested, and its driver manual advises against three-point turns. The prep page's line 'Signal and turn from the improper lane into the proper lane' appears to be a typo for 'proper lane'; it is quoted as published.
