Kansas motorcycle rules to know

  • K.S.A. 8-1598 requires anyone under 18 who operates or rides on a motorcycle to wear an approved helmet. Adults are not required to by this law, but the manual still strongly recommends one: helmeted riders are three times more likely to survive head injuries. Kansas Motorcycle Handbook, page 8
  • In Kansas, every motorcycle operator must wear an eye-protective device (protective glasses, goggles or a transparent face shield that is shatterproof and impact resistant). The only exception is a motorcycle with a windscreen at least 10 inches tall, measured from the center of the handlebars. Wind, dust, insects and pebbles in your eyes pull your attention off the road. Kansas Motorcycle Handbook, page 9
  • K.S.A. 8-1598(c) excuses the operator from eye protection only when the motorcycle has a windscreen with a minimum height of 10 inches, measured from the center of the handlebars. Even then, the manual points out most windshields will not keep wind out of your eyes, so goggles or a face shield are still wise. Kansas Motorcycle Handbook, page 9
  • Kansas law says no one under 18 may ride as a passenger on a motorcycle without an eye-protective device: protective glasses, goggles or a transparent face shield that is shatterproof and impact resistant. Passengers face the same wind, bugs and road debris as the operator. Kansas Motorcycle Handbook, page 8
  • Kansas law says no one may operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles. Riding between cars also leaves you open to a door opening, a hand out the window or a sudden lane change. Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles website
  • In Kansas, a person with a BAC of 0.08% or above is considered intoxicated, no matter how sober they look or act. A breath or urine test usually decides it. Remember that judgment and skills are affected long before you reach that level. Kansas Motorcycle Handbook, page 41
