Kansas Motorcycle Permit Exam Simulator

A full-length mock motorcycle knowledge test: Kansas does not publish the count or pass mark; we use 30 questions at 80%. New questions every attempt.

How this simulator works

  • Knowledge test: 30 questions, 24 correct to pass.
  • No time limit, like the real test. Take your time.
  • You won’t see whether you were right until the end, just like at the Kansas test. Then you can review every answer with its explanation.
  • Questions are drawn fresh from the full Kansas bank each time.

Sample questions

  1. Vehicles are traveling on both sides of you. Which part of your lane is usually best?

    • A The center of the lane, path 2
    • B The left third, path 1
    • C The right third, path 3
    • D Straddling the lane line to stay visible
    Show answer

    A. The center of the lane, path 2

Each lane has three paths. With hazards only on your left, ride in path 2 or 3; with hazards only on your right, ride in path 1 or 2. When vehicles are on both sides, the center (path 2) usually gives you the most space.

  2. You are leaning through a curve when you suddenly need to stop quickly. If there is room to do it, what is the best technique?

    • A Brake hard with both brakes while staying leaned over
    • B Use only the rear brake and hold your lean angle
    • C Close the throttle and let engine braking stop you
    • D Straighten the motorcycle upright first, then brake
    Show answer

    D. Straighten the motorcycle upright first, then brake

When the motorcycle leans, some of the tires' traction is used for cornering, so less is left for stopping. If you must stop quickly in a curve, the best technique is to straighten the bike upright first and then brake. If you cannot, apply the brakes lightly and reduce the throttle, adding brake pressure as the lean angle decreases.

  3. Under Kansas law, what do you need to drive an autocycle (a three-wheel motorcycle with a steering wheel and non-straddle seating)?

    • A A full class M motorcycle license with no restrictions
    • B No motorcycle license; one is not required
    • C A class M license with a W restriction
    • D A moped license
    Show answer

    B. No motorcycle license; one is not required

Kansas defines an autocycle as a three-wheel motorcycle with a steering wheel and seating you do not straddle. The manual notes it does not require a motorcycle license. Riders of other three-wheelers still need a class M license.

  4. Under Kansas law, which motorcycle riders must wear a helmet?

    • A Every operator and every passenger on a motorcycle, regardless of age
    • B Anyone under 18, whether operating or riding as a passenger
    • C Only riders who hold an instruction permit
    • D Only operators under 21; passengers are exempt
    Show answer

    B. Anyone under 18, whether operating or riding as a passenger

K.S.A. 8-1598 requires anyone under 18 who operates or rides on a motorcycle to wear an approved helmet. Adults are not required to by this law, but the manual still strongly recommends one: helmeted riders are three times more likely to survive head injuries.
