Maine motorcycle rules to know
- You must be at least 16 to get a Maine motorcycle license, and if you are under 18 you must also have completed basic driver education. Remember it as 16 to ride, with driver ed required until 18. - Maine law says no motorcycle learner's permit, license or endorsement may be issued until you show a certificate for a rider education course approved by the Secretary of State. The course mixes classroom and hands-on riding, so you learn basic control before riding in traffic. (The older manual describes an 8-hour block; current law requires the approved course.) - Maine law makes a motorcycle learner's permit valid for two years. If you do not pass the road test within those two years, you must retake the motorcycle rider education course before another permit can be issued, so plan your practice and road test within that window. Maine Motorcycle Operator Manual (With Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 59
- The Secretary of State may waive the motorcycle road examination when you show a certificate for successfully completing the Basic Rider Course (BRC). Current Maine law (29-A MRSA §1352) words this as any Secretary of State-approved rider education course, and the BRC is the course the BMV requires of every applicant. The course includes hands-on riding instruction, which is why it can stand in for the road test. Maine Motorcycle Operator Manual (With Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 59
- Maine lets you use your course completion certificate as a temporary motorcycle permit for 60 days from the completion date printed on it. While using it you must carry it, wear a helmet and carry no passengers. Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (Department of the Secretary of State) website
- Maine defines a motorcycle as having an engine over 50 cubic centimeters (or an electric motor of at least 1500 watts). At 50 cc or less, with an automatic drive, the vehicle is a moped instead. The 50 cc line decides which rules and permit you need. Maine Motorcycle Operator Manual (With Supplementary Information for Three-Wheel Motorcycles), page 58
