The Maine BMV road test is an in-town drive with a BMV driver's license examiner, given only after the written and vision tests are passed. Vehicle requirements
The examiner checks your car before you drive. If it fails, you usually can’t take the test that day.
You supply the vehicle; it must be properly registered and have a current Maine inspection sticker
Not registered as an antique automobile

Equipped for the weather (for example snow treads or chains)

How the Maine road test is scored
Maine publishes no point system, error limit or score sheet. The examiner makes an overall pass/fail judgment on your control of the vehicle, lane position, turns, observation and reaction to traffic, signs and pedestrians, and driving habits. If you do not pass, the examiner tells you why and what to practice. Official source 2maine.gov“The duty of the examiner is to render an impartial decision covering all phases of the road test.”“The reason for road test disqualification can vary depending on road conditions, traffic and the applicant's judgment and ability to cope with situations that arise during a road test, as well as driving habits.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026Official source 3maine.gov“If you do not qualify for your license, we will give you information about why you were not successful and what you need to practice before your next test.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026
Automatic failures
We found no official list of automatic failures for Maine. Treat any dangerous action, a crash, or breaking a traffic law as likely to fail the test.
Maneuvers on the Maine driving test
Steps and scoring come from Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (Department of the Secretary of State)’s own materials, in their words where possible. Where a state publishes no steps, we say so rather than guess.
Parallel parking (offset backing)
Always tested
How it’s scored
Part of every Class C road test. The examiner judges your control of the vehicle while backing; the handbook says you should end about 6 inches, and not more than 18 inches, from the curb.
Steps
Find a parking space, check for traffic and signal.
Pull up parallel to the vehicle you will park behind, stopping even with it about 2 feet away.
When traffic is clear, shift to reverse and look to the rear.
Turn the wheels sharply right, look over your right shoulder and back slowly toward the car behind.
When your front door passes the back bumper of the car ahead, quickly straighten the wheels and keep backing straight.
When clear of the car ahead, turn the wheels sharply left and back slowly toward the car behind.
Stop before touching the bumper of the vehicle behind you.
Turn the wheels sharply right and pull forward toward the center of the space.
Straighten the wheels; finish about 6 inches and no more than 18 inches from the curb.

Straight-line backing
Always tested
How it’s scored
Part of every Class C road test. The examiner assesses whether you keep control of the vehicle while driving backward.
Steps
Check behind the vehicle before you get in.
Apply the brake and shift to reverse; grasp the wheel at 12 o'clock with your left hand.
Put your right arm on the back of the passenger seat and look through the rear window; do not rely only on mirrors or a back-up camera.
Back slowly, no faster than a slow walk, and keep looking to the rear until you are fully stopped.

Notes from our check
Maine publishes no road-test score sheet, point system, error limit or list of automatic failures; the handbook says only that disqualification depends on the applicant's judgment, ability to cope with situations and driving habits. The handbook's Appendix A lists reasons the examiner may refuse to give the test (recorded under vehicle). BMV rule 29-250 Chapter 4 (Driver License Examination Rules, Word file on maine.gov/sos) adds that only the applicant and examiner may ride along unless the Secretary of State authorizes otherwise, no pets are allowed, examiners may not use tricks or ask you to do anything unlawful, and the applicant must present the appointment form, a valid permit, the accompanying driver's license and the vehicle's registration; it is not quoted here because the checker cannot read .docx files. The BMV's road-test video transcript (also .docx, linked from the Drivers License Exam page) shows the examiner starting with a vehicle check of turn signals, horn, headlights and high beams, and windshield wipers, describes the straight backup as about 50 feet along the curb, and says to look over your right shoulder through the rear window when backing. The handbook describes two-point and three-point turnarounds, but no official source says they are part of the Class C road test, so they are left out. Snow or ice: you may reschedule at no fee, and exams during state office closures are rescheduled automatically.
