Maryland motorcycle rules to know

  • Under the Maryland manual, if you have no Maryland license, hold a Maryland license of another class, or your license expired more than a year ago, you must pass the Class C knowledge test on top of the motorcycle exams. The car test checks that you know the general rules of the road that every rider must follow. Maryland Motorcycle Operator Manual (DL-001), page 4
  • Maryland applicants under 18 must successfully complete an approved motorcycle safety course, the Basic Rider Course or Alternate Basic Rider Course. Young riders have the least experience, so formal training with a certified instructor is mandatory rather than optional. Maryland Motorcycle Operator Manual (DL-001), page 4
  • Maryland gives separate skill tests for two- and three-wheeled motorcycles. If you pass on a three-wheeled motorcycle, your license is restricted to the type of motorcycle used for the test. Riding a two-wheeler takes balance and skills the trike test does not check. Maryland Motorcycle Operator Manual (DL-001), page 7
  • Maryland motorcycle learners may carry, only as a passenger, a licensed motorcycle driver who is at least 21 and has had a motorcycle license for at least three years. Anyone else on the back adds weight and distraction without adding supervision. Maryland Motorcycle Operator Manual (DL-001), page 5
  • Maryland defines immediate supervision as being in the vicinity of the motorcycle in a capacity to assist and protect the learner. The supervisor may be a passenger, on foot, or in another vehicle within safe traveling distance, which suits a vehicle that often has room for only one rider. Maryland Motorcycle Operator Manual (DL-001), page 5
  • After a first failure you may retest the next day if an appointment is available, but after a second or later failure you must wait at least seven calendar days. The pause gives you time to study or practice the parts you missed instead of retesting repeatedly. Maryland Motorcycle Operator Manual (DL-001), page 6
