Minnesota motorcycle rules to know
- Minnesota requires a valid Minnesota driver's license before you can get a motorcycle instruction permit. The motorcycle permit and endorsement are added on top of your regular license, not issued in place of it. Minnesota Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual, page 7
- When you pass the knowledge test and pay the $29 fee, you get a motorcycle instruction permit valid for one year. That year is meant for practice so you are ready for the skills test. Minnesota Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual, page 7
- Riders under 18 must present a certificate of completion from a state-approved motorcycle rider training course to get the permit. Formal training gives young riders the basic control skills before they practice in traffic. Minnesota Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual, page 7
- Minnesota permit holders may not carry passengers, may not ride at night, and must wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection. A passenger changes how the motorcycle handles, which is too much for a new rider still learning control. Minnesota Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual, page 7
- Permit holders may not ride at night, and Minnesota defines night as the time from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. Darkness makes it harder for new riders to see hazards and for drivers to see a motorcycle. Minnesota Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual, page 7
- A 2018 change lets Minnesota motorcycle permit holders ride on the interstate. The other permit restrictions (no passengers, no night riding, helmet and eye protection) still apply there. Minnesota Motorcycle and Motorized Bicycle Manual, page 3
