You are in the acceleration lane of an interstate on-ramp. How fast should you be going when you merge?
- A Well above traffic speed, to get ahead
- B About the speed of interstate traffic
- C Well below traffic speed, to be careful
- D The posted ramp speed, without speeding up
Show answer
B. About the speed of interstate traffic
Use the acceleration lane to reach the speed of interstate traffic, signal, yield to approaching vehicles and merge smoothly. Merging slower or faster than traffic is dangerous.
At least how far before your interstate exit should you be in the correct lane?
- A One-quarter mile
- B One mile
- C One-tenth of a mile
- D Just as the exit ramp begins
Show answer

Be in the correct lane at least a quarter mile before your exit. Most exits are on the right, but some leave from the left lane, so watch the signs.

- B Make a U-turn through the median
- C Stop on the shoulder and back up
- D Continue to the next exit
Show answer

If you miss your exit, never stop, back up or turn around. Go on to the next exit and find your way back from there.
When should you begin to slow down to leave the interstate?
- A After you have moved into the deceleration lane
- B A quarter mile before the exit, in the travel lane
- C Only after you reach the end of the ramp
- D As soon as you see the exit sign
Show answer
A. After you have moved into the deceleration lane
Check beside and behind you, signal, and move into the deceleration lane. Do not slow down until you are in it, then slow to the posted ramp speed.
