Sample questions
In Montana, what do you need to ride a motor scooter on a public street?
- A A motorcycle endorsement on a valid driver license
- B A regular driver license with no motorcycle endorsement
- C Only a scooter registration sticker
- D Nothing, if the scooter stays under 35 mph
Show answer
A. A motorcycle endorsement on a valid driver license
Montana law makes it illegal to operate a motor scooter, motorcycle or any other motor-driven cycle on a public street or highway without a motorcycle endorsement on a valid driver license. Small size or low speed does not change the rule, so scooter riders must earn the endorsement too.

What does Montana require of a motorcycle's headlamp?
- A One or two headlamps that light 200 feet and are used after dark
- B One or two headlamps reaching 500 feet, on at all times
- C Up to three headlamps that light 300 feet when it is cloudy
- D At least one headlamp that lights 100 feet during daylight
Show answer
B. One or two headlamps reaching 500 feet, on at all times
Your motorcycle must have at least one, but no more than two, headlamps that light the road at least 500 feet ahead, and the headlamp must be on at all times. Riding with the light on even in daylight makes you much easier for drivers to notice.

Who should carry passengers or large loads on a motorcycle?
- A Any rider with a learner license
- B Only experienced riders
- C Any rider on a large motorcycle
- D Any rider once the passenger has a helmet
Show answer
B. Only experienced riders
The extra weight of a passenger or cargo changes how the motorcycle accelerates, brakes and turns. For this reason only experienced riders should carry passengers or large loads, and only after preparing themselves and the motorcycle.

- C Wherever lets your feet reach the rear axle

Show answer
D. Far enough that your arms are slightly bent
Sit far enough forward that your arms are slightly bent when you hold the handgrips. Bent arms let you press on the handlebars to steer without stretching.
