What does Montana require of a motorcycle's headlamp?
- A One or two headlamps that light 200 feet and are used after dark
- B One or two headlamps reaching 500 feet, on at all times
- C Up to three headlamps that light 300 feet when it is cloudy
- D At least one headlamp that lights 100 feet during daylight
Show answer
B. One or two headlamps reaching 500 feet, on at all times
Your motorcycle must have at least one, but no more than two, headlamps that light the road at least 500 feet ahead, and the headlamp must be on at all times. Riding with the light on even in daylight makes you much easier for drivers to notice.

During a quick stop, your front wheel locks. What should you do?
- A Keep the front brake locked until you stop
- B Release both brakes and coast to a stop
- C Release the front brake immediately, then reapply it firmly
- D Pull in the clutch and press harder on the front
Show answer
C. Release the front brake immediately, then reapply it firmly
To stop quickly, apply both brakes at the same time. If the front wheel locks, release the front brake immediately, then reapply it firmly. A front-wheel skid causes an immediate loss of steering control and balance.

How will your motorcycle feel if the front tire goes flat?
- A The back of the motorcycle will sway side to side
- B The steering will feel heavy
- C The engine will lose power
- D You will hear a loud pop every time
Show answer
B. The steering will feel heavy
If the front tire goes flat, the steering will feel heavy, which is especially dangerous because it affects your steering and balance. A rear flat makes the back of the motorcycle jerk or sway. You will seldom hear a tire go flat, so watch for handling changes.

- A 14 and a half with a traffic education course
- B 18, or 16 with a parent's written consent

Show answer
C. 16, or 15 if you have passed an approved driver's education course
You must be at least 16, or 15 if you have passed a driver's education course approved by the Montana Department of Justice and the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The education course is what lets a 15-year-old qualify a year early.
