New York motorcycle rules to know
- Outside New York City and Long Island, your supervisor must hold a valid motorcycle license and be at least 21. (In New York City and on Long Island the supervisor must also be a parent, guardian or driving instructor.) A fully licensed rider can spot mistakes and coach you before they turn into crashes. New York State Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MV-21MC), page 4
- The supervising motorcyclist must remain within 1/4 mile of you at all times, and the manual adds that you should stay within sight of each other. Being close lets the supervisor watch your riding and step in if something goes wrong. New York State Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MV-21MC), page 4
- Under New York law (VTL 501), a rider with a motorcycle learner permit may not carry another person unless that person holds a valid Class M license. Carrying a passenger changes how a motorcycle handles, so the law limits learners to passengers who are licensed riders themselves. New York State Department of Motor Vehicles website
- The motorcycle manual recommends at least 30 hours of practice, including at least 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic. It also tells you and your supervisor to stay within sight of each other and to talk over your riding after each practice. New York State Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MV-21MC), page 4
- If you pass the road test on a three-wheeler, your motorcycle license is restricted to three-wheelers. A trike steers and balances differently from a two-wheeled motorcycle, so the skills shown on one do not carry over. New York State Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MV-21MC), page 4
- Unlike most vehicles, New York motorcycles are registered for one year instead of two, and every motorcycle registration expires on April 30. The spring date lines up with the start of the riding season. New York State Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MV-21MC), page 5
