Maneuvers on the New York driving test
Steps and scoring come from New York State Department of Motor Vehicles’s own materials, in their words where possible. Where a state publishes no steps, we say so rather than guess.
Parallel parking
Always tested
How it’s scored
Part of every road test. In the final position your wheels must be no more than one foot from the curb. Automatic parallel parking may not be used.
Steps
Pick a space big enough for your vehicle; check mirrors and signal
Stop next to the vehicle in front of the space, about two feet away from it
Look over both shoulders, then back slowly while turning the wheel completely toward the near curb; look through the rear window, not the mirrors
When your front wheels are opposite the back bumper of the vehicle ahead, turn the wheel the other way while you keep backing; stop before touching the vehicle behind
Straighten the wheels and pull forward, leaving room ahead and behind; end no more than one foot from the curb
SourcesOfficial source 6dmv.ny.gov“Parallel parking takes skill and is part of every road test.”“Stop next to the vehicle in front of the space and leave about two feet between the other vehicle and your vehicle.”“Back the vehicle slowly and begin to turn your steering wheel completely toward the near curb. Look through the rear window, not the mirrors, when you back up.”“When your front wheels are opposite the back bumper of the vehicle ahead, turn the steering wheel the other way while you continue to back up.”“Bring your wheels straight and pull forward. Allow room for the vehicles ahead and behind you. In your final parking position, your wheels must be no more than one foot (30 cm) from the curb.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026
Three-point turn
May be tested
How it’s scored
You may be required to make one on the road test.
Steps
Signal right, pull over to the right and stop
Signal left, check carefully for traffic from all directions
Turn left across the road and stop facing the left curb or edge
Look for traffic again, turn the wheel fully right and look behind you as you back up; stop before the right curb or any obstacle
Check for traffic again, turn the wheel fully left and pull forward to complete the turn when safe
SourcesOfficial source 7dmv.ny.gov“You may be required to make a three-point turn on your road test.”“Signal with your right turn signal, then pull over to the right and stop. Skills the examiner watches the whole time
Observation without relying on driver-assist features
Do head checks and use mirrors and cameras; the examiner checks that you did not rely on ADAS features. Official source 4dmv.ny.gov“It is your responsibility to be aware of everything around you by performing head checks and using mirrors and cameras to observe traffic and other roadway users.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026
Pulling out from a parking space
Look over your shoulder, use the mirrors, signal, and enter the traffic lane only when it is safe. Official source 6dmv.ny.gov“turn your head and look over your left shoulder to look through the rear-window, drive into the traffic lane when it is safe to do so.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026

Notes from our check
NY DMV publishes no Class D road test score sheet, point values, pass mark, list of disqualifying errors or test length. The only published NY road test score sheet with point values and DQ items (DS-875) is for the Article 19-A bus driver biennial test. It is not the Class D test, so it is not used here. The '15 minutes ... backing the vehicle to the curb' description in Chapter 1 refers to the 'R' recreational-vehicle endorsement road test, not Class D. Driver's manual Chapter 13 says 'parking assist and cruise control' may not be used. Its table lists adaptive cruise control and automatic parallel parking as not permitted, and other warning and assist systems as permitted. Road tests are scheduled at dmv.ny.gov or 1-518-402-2100. Possession of a firearm at a road test site is prohibited.
