Sample questions

  1. Under North Carolina law, what must you have before you may operate a motorcycle on public roads?

    • A A license with a motorcycle endorsement, or a motorcycle learner permit
    • B Only a regular driver's license with no extra testing
    • C A separate motorcycle-only license card issued yearly
    • D Proof of a completed rider safety course carried while riding
    Show answer

    A. A license with a motorcycle endorsement, or a motorcycle learner permit

North Carolina requires a regular or commercial license with a motorcycle endorsement, or a motorcycle learner permit, before you may operate a motorcycle on public roads. The endorsement shows you passed the motorcycle knowledge and skills tests; the learner permit is a temporary step for riders not yet ready for the skills test.

  2. During a quick stop on a good surface, you accidentally lock the rear wheel. What should you do?

    • A Let go of both brakes and coast
    • B Lean the motorcycle and steer toward the shoulder to stop
    • C Release it at once and reapply it hard
    • D Keep it locked until you have completely stopped
    Show answer

    D. Keep it locked until you have completely stopped

If you lock the rear brake on a good traction surface, keep it locked until you have stopped. Even with a locked rear wheel you can control the motorcycle on a straightaway if it is upright and going straight. A locked front wheel is different: release and reapply it.

  3. If your front tire goes flat while riding, how will the motorcycle feel?

    • A The back will jerk from side to side
    • B The steering will feel heavy
    • C You will hear a loud pop and hiss first
    • D The engine will lose power suddenly
    Show answer

    B. The steering will feel heavy

You will seldom hear a tire go flat, so learn the feel. A front flat makes steering feel heavy and is especially hazardous because it affects steering; a rear flat makes the back jerk from side to side.

  4. In North Carolina, what happens if your alcohol test shows 0.08 or more while riding a motorcycle (not a commercial vehicle)?

    • A You must take an alcohol safety course but may keep riding
    • B You get a written warning on a first offense
    • C Your license is revoked for 10 days
    • D Your privilege is revoked at once for at least 30 days
    Show answer

    D. Your privilege is revoked at once for at least 30 days

In North Carolina, an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more means your driving privilege is revoked immediately for a minimum of 30 days. It does not matter how sober you look or act; the chemical test result is what usually decides.
