Driving and Skills Test (maneuverability test and on-road driving test)

Ohio Road Test (2026) What’s on the Driving Test, Scoring & Tips

Ohio's driving test has two parts, given at a BMV Driver Exam Station: a maneuverability test, where you drive forward and then back through a box of markers, and an on-road test with an examiner in the front passenger seat. Each part is scored by deducting points, and you fail if you lose more than 25 points on either part. Running over or knocking down a marker is an immediate failure.

Who can take the Ohio road test

You need a temporary instruction permit (TIPIC). Drivers under 18 must hold the TIPIC at least six months, finish driver education (24 hours of class or online plus 8 hours of driving) and log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night. Drivers under 21 also need driver education and the 50-hour affidavit. How the Ohio road test is scored

Points are deducted for each error. You pass if you lose no more than 25 points on the road test and no more than 25 points on the maneuverability test. The point value of each error is set on a form the Registrar prescribes; Ohio does not publish that form. Official source 3codes.ohio.gov“The applicant shall be considered to have passed the examination for a license to operate a standard type four-wheel vehicle provided the applicant does not receive a minus score in excess of twenty-five points in either part of the examination”“The number of points to be deducted for failure to perform each skill and maneuver contained in the examination shall be as specified on the appropriate form prescribed by the registrar.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026

Maneuvers on the Ohio driving test

Steps and scoring come from Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (Ohio Department of Public Safety)’s own materials, in their words where possible. Where a state publishes no steps, we say so rather than guess.

Maneuverability test, step one: forward through the markers

Always tested

How it’s scored

Points are deducted for stopping, bumping markers, misjudging the stopping distance, or not ending parallel with the course. Running over or knocking down a marker, or moving it out of the designated area, is an immediate failure.

Steps

  1. Drive forward through a 9-foot by 20-foot box formed by four markers.
  2. The examiner tells you to steer to the right or the left of the center marker.
  3. Steer straight ahead and stop when your rear bumper is even with the center marker and the car is generally parallel with the course.
SourcesOfficial source 4publicsafety.ohio.gov“Drive forward through a 9-foot x 20-foot course formed by four markers. Measurements are taken from the one center marker. The Driver Examiner directs you to steer to the right or the left of the center marker.”“Steer straight ahead and stop when the rear bumper of the vehicle is even with the center marker and generally parallel with the course.”“Points are deducted for stopping, bumping markers, misjudging stopping distance, or not being parallel with the test area.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026

Maneuverability test, step two: backing through the markers

Always tested

How it’s scored

Same deductions as step one (stopping, bumping markers, misjudging the stop, not parallel). You must then leave the course without running over markers or any other disqualifying action.

Steps

  1. From where you stopped in step one, back up past the center marker.
  2. Straighten the car and keep backing through the box.
  3. Stop with the front bumper even with the two rear markers and the car generally parallel with the course.
  4. Drive out of the test area without running over any markers.
SourcesOfficial source 4publicsafety.ohio.gov“From the stopped position at the end of Step One, move in reverse past the center marker. Straighten the vehicle and continue back through the course, coming to a stop with the front bumper even with the two rear markers and generally parallel with the course.”“Remove the vehicle from the test course area without running over markers or performing any other disqualifying actions.”Open the official page (opens in a new tab) ↗Checked October 4, 2026

Turn around and back up (on-road test)

Always tested

If you fail the Ohio road test

Under 21: wait two days before retesting. 21 and older: after failing the first attempt you must complete an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course (4 hours of class or online plus either 4 hours with a driving school or 24 logged hours with a licensed driver 21+) before the second attempt, unless you finished driver training in the 12 months before the failed test. After a second failure no further course is required, but you wait at least two days. No attempt limit or retest fee is published. Waivers and third-party testing

Tests can be taken at a BMV Driver Exam Station or at a Designated Testing Location run in partnership with the BMV, which may charge a fee. Applicants with a valid, unexpired license from another state may have the knowledge and road tests waived, though an examiner can require the road test for good cause. Ohio road test questions

What is on the Ohio road test?

Ohio's driving test has two parts, given at a BMV Driver Exam Station: a maneuverability test, where you drive forward and then back through a box of markers, and an on-road test with an examiner in the front passenger seat. Each part is scored by deducting points, and you fail if you lose more than 25 points on either part. Running over or knocking down a marker is an immediate failure. Maneuvers covered by official sources: Maneuverability test, step one: forward through the markers, Maneuverability test, step two: backing through the markers, Turn around and back up (on-road test).

How is the Ohio driving test scored?

Points are deducted for each error. You pass if you lose no more than 25 points on the road test and no more than 25 points on the maneuverability test. The point value of each error is set on a form the Registrar prescribes; Ohio does not publish that form.

What is an automatic fail on the Ohio road test?

Official Ohio sources list these as automatic failures: Running over or knocking down a marker on the maneuverability course; Moving a marker out of the designated area; Other dangerous actions; and Losing more than 25 points on either the road test or the maneuverability test.

What do I need to bring to the Ohio road test?

Your TIPIC (temporary instruction permit); Completed BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit (under 21, or a limited-term non-renewable TIPIC); Driver Education Certificate (under 18; under 21 it may be requested if BMV can't verify it electronically); and A vehicle in good condition for testing.

What are the vehicle requirements for the Ohio road test?

Working turn signals, brake lights, horn, windshield wipers and headlights (checked before the test); Front doors must open from inside and outside with the door handle; Current registration displayed on the license plate; and Automated assistance tools such as automated parking must be turned off.

When can I take the Ohio road test?

You need a temporary instruction permit (TIPIC). Drivers under 18 must hold the TIPIC at least six months, finish driver education (24 hours of class or online plus 8 hours of driving) and log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night. Drivers under 21 also need driver education and the 50-hour affidavit.

What happens if I fail the Ohio road test?

Under 21: wait two days before retesting. 21 and older: after failing the first attempt you must complete an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course (4 hours of class or online plus either 4 hours with a driving school or 24 logged hours with a licensed driver 21+) before the second attempt, unless you finished driver training in the 12 months before the failed test. After a second failure no further course is required, but you wait at least two days. No attempt limit or retest fee is published.

Can the Ohio road test be waived?

Tests can be taken at a BMV Driver Exam Station or at a Designated Testing Location run in partnership with the BMV, which may charge a fee. Applicants with a valid, unexpired license from another state may have the knowledge and road tests waived, though an examiner can require the road test for good cause.

Notes from our check

No official score sheet is published. OAC 4501:1-1-10 says deductions follow a form prescribed by the Registrar, but neither the BMV nor ODPS posts it, so the point value of each error isn't public. The maneuverability course is five markers (the handbook says the front bumper ends even with the rear markers in step two; the BMV page just says 'the bumper'). The on-road test has no published route elements beyond the six listed actions; parallel parking is not part of the Ohio test. The on-road 'turn around and back up' item has no published method.
