Sample railroad crossings questions
You must stop at a railroad crossing that has no stop line. How far from the nearest rail should you stop?
- A At least 15 feet
- B At least 10 feet
- C At least 50 feet
- D At least 5 feet
Show answer
A. At least 15 feet
When you must stop at a railroad crossing, stop at the stop line. If there is none, stop at least 15 feet from the nearest rail so a passing train cannot clip your vehicle.
The crossing gate at a railroad crossing is rising after a train passed. When may you drive under or around it?
- A Once the gate is halfway up
- B As soon as the train you saw has cleared the crossing
- C Never; wait until the gate is fully up and the lights stop
- D When no other cars are waiting with you
Show answer
C. Never; wait until the gate is fully up and the lights stop
It is against the law to drive around or under a crossing gate while it is down, rising or lowering. At multiple tracks, a second train may be coming right behind the first.
Your car stalls on railroad tracks and you have gotten everyone out. A train is coming. Which way should you move?
- A Away from the tracks at a 45-degree angle toward the train
- B At a 45-degree angle away from the train
- C Back to the car to try to push it off
- D Straight down the tracks away from the train
Show answer
A. Away from the tracks at a 45-degree angle toward the train
If you are stuck on the tracks, get out and get away, even if you do not see a train. If a train is coming, move away at a 45-degree angle toward the train so debris from the impact does not hit you. Then use the Emergency Notification System sign to alert the railroad.
A streetcar is stopped in the lane to your left, traveling the same direction as you. You want to turn left. What should you do?
- A Honk to let the operator know you are turning
- B Do not turn in front of it, even though it is stopped
- C Turn quickly while it is stopped
- D Turn if you signal at least 100 feet ahead
Show answer
B. Do not turn in front of it, even though it is stopped
Streetcars and light rail trains cannot stop quickly or steer around you. Never turn in front of one traveling your way in an adjacent lane, even if it is stopped; wait until it has gone.
