Yield sign

Regulatory signs

Yield sign

Slow down and be ready to stop. Let vehicles and pedestrians already in or approaching the intersection go first.

MUTCD designation R1-2. See the federal MUTCD, page 6.

How to read signs like this

Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.

    Show answer

    B. Slow down and let other traffic go first, stopping if needed

The downward-pointing triangle is used only for the sign that tells you to yield. You must slow to a safe speed and stop if needed so you do not interfere with traffic or pedestrians who have the right-of-way. If the way is clear, you may continue without a full stop.
