All-way plaque sign
Mounted under a stop sign: every approach to this intersection must stop.
MUTCD designation R1-3P. See the federal MUTCD, page 6.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
This red plaque is mounted directly below a red octagonal sign. What does it tell you?
- A Only traffic going straight through has to stop
- B Traffic on every approach to the intersection must stop
- C Cross traffic does not stop, so wait for a long gap
- D Drivers turning right may go without stopping
Show answer
B. Traffic on every approach to the intersection must stop
This plaque is added under the stop sign when all approaches to an intersection are stop-controlled. Knowing everyone must stop helps you take turns: generally the first vehicle to stop goes first. It does not change your duty to stop fully and look before you go.
