No turn on red (circular red symbol) sign

Regulatory signs

No turn on red (circular red symbol) sign

You may not turn while the signal is red. Wait for green.

MUTCD designation R10-11a. See the federal MUTCD, page 174.

How to read signs like this

Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.

Practice question

  1. Road sign for this question

You are stopped at a red light and see this sign. What must you do?

    • A Turn after making a complete stop and yielding
    • B Stop behind the white line, then proceed on red
    • C Avoid turning at this intersection at any time
    • D Wait for green even if no traffic is coming
    Show answer

    D. Wait for green even if no traffic is coming

Many places let drivers turn right on red after a full stop. This sign removes that option at this signal, usually because of poor sight lines or many pedestrians. Stay stopped until the light turns green, then turn if it is safe.
