Left turn yield on green sign
On a green ball (not a green arrow) you may turn left, but you must yield to oncoming traffic.
MUTCD designation R10-12. See the federal MUTCD, page 27.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
This sign is next to a left-turn signal. What does it mean when the light shows a solid green ball?
- A Left turns are allowed only on a green arrow
- B Oncoming drivers must stop when your light is green so you can turn
- C You may turn left, but only after yielding to oncoming traffic
- D Left turns are banned while the light is green
Show answer
C. You may turn left, but only after yielding to oncoming traffic
A solid green ball allows a left turn, but it is not protected, so oncoming traffic also has a green. This sign reminds you to wait for a safe gap and to yield to pedestrians before turning. Only a green arrow gives you the right-of-way for the turn.
