Left turn only sign
Traffic in this lane must turn left.
MUTCD designation R3-5L. See the federal MUTCD, page 7.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
This sign hangs over your lane. What must you do?
- A Turn left or go straight, whichever you choose
- B Do not turn left from this lane at any time
- C Turn left only when a green arrow appears on the signal
- D Turn left; you may not go straight from this lane
Show answer
D. Turn left; you may not go straight from this lane
Overhead lane signs with the word ONLY show the single movement required from that lane. If you are in this lane, you must turn left. If you want to go straight, move to a through lane well before the intersection.
