How to read signs like this

Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.

Practice question

  1. Road sign for this question

What does this sign show you before an intersection?

    • A Which way each lane may go at the next intersection
    • B That the lanes ahead merge into a single lane
    • C A detour route around a lane that is closed for work ahead
    • D That only the right lane may turn left
    Show answer

    A. Which way each lane may go at the next intersection

This sign maps out every lane at the coming intersection, with arrows showing the allowed movements. Arrows marked ONLY are required movements for that lane. Reading it early lets you settle into the right lane without sudden moves.
