Two-way left turn only sign
The center lane is only for vehicles turning left from either direction, not for passing or travel.
MUTCD designation R3-9a.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
This sign hangs over the center lane of a street. How may you use that lane?
- A To pass slow vehicles whenever the oncoming lane is clear
- B Only for left turns, by drivers from both directions
- C For through traffic only during rush hours
- D Only by buses and vehicles carrying passengers
Show answer
B. Only for left turns, by drivers from both directions
A two-way left-turn lane lets drivers from either direction move out of traffic to wait for a gap before turning left. It is never used for passing or for driving straight. Enter it shortly before your turn and watch for drivers coming the other way in the same lane.
