Do not pass sign
Passing other vehicles is not allowed here.
MUTCD designation R4-1. See the federal MUTCD, page 7.
How to read signs like this
Regulatory signs tell you what the law requires: stop, yield, speed limits, turns and lanes. Most are white rectangles with black or red. Red means stop, yield or a prohibition; a red circle with a slash means “no”.
Practice question
This sign is posted on a two-lane road. What does it mean?
- A You may not pass other vehicles along this stretch
- B You may not drive on the paved shoulder
- C Slower vehicles must move over to the right-hand lane here
- D You may pass, but only with extra caution
Show answer
A. You may not pass other vehicles along this stretch
This white regulatory sign backs up the no-passing pavement markings on two-lane roads. It is posted where hills, curves or other conditions make passing unsafe. Stay in your lane until you reach a sign or marking that allows passing again.
